• Earmark at least 500 sq. m of land for the Herbal Grden
• Select a group of 10-15 students who will manage & own the herbal garden voluntarily as a Self Help Group
• Prepare the land by way of fencing, levelling, providing proper drainage, manuring, etc.
• The Herbal Garden should have an elegant design
• Botany lecturer/Env. Sc. Teacher to be involved
• 10-20 species of medicinal plants to be planted.
• To work out possibility of species specific herbal gardens
• Linkages shall be established in due course of time with agencies like J & K state Medicinal Plants Board, NMPB, SKUAST-J,IIIM, Forest department, National Innovation Foundation, Jammu University, End users, Herb delears, etc
• Ex-situ conservation of rare plants/herbs to be done
• Cost-benefit Analysis to be done
• Development of small nurseries. Plant material/Herbal produce to be sold to the end users.
• Research activities to be carried out in collaboration with research institutions

List of Schools of Jammu Division where Project Herbal Garden have started or about to start

Project Activities:

• It is proposed that at least 2 workshops shall be conducted each year for schools to create awareness about the implementation of the project. Also, awareness programmes shall be conducted about locally available medicinal plants, their uses and benefits. Follow ups, field visits to school herbal gardens and experience sharing on the development of Medicinal Plant Gardens will also be done.
• Preliminary activity for the identification/selection of 150 schools and 10 DIETs has been already done.
• Conduct of workshops for the principals, teachers and the gardeners of the selected school wherein:
• Experts would be invited to demonstrate and guide the target audience on ways and means of establishing a medicinal plant garden
• Distribution of saplings, seeds and beginners guide book among the targeted schools/institutions
• Establishing 10 lead schools in each district that will act as mother nurseries and provide saplings to the nearby schools and community members.
• Establishing a Model Nursery/Model Herbal Garden in each district of DIET
• The students shall be actively engaged in the following activities to arouse in them aesthetic sense, interest in nurture, enthusiasm and increase their knowledge:
  • Poster making competition
  • Essay competition
  • Field trips
  • Nature study camps
  • Herbarium/Sample collection
  • Herb Exhibition/Stall
